Liyan Ma joined Rain Media in 2023 as China producer for a two-part documentary series about the rising tensions between China and the United States. This report will air in the fall of 2024 over twos nights. 

 

For the past decade Liyan has produced award-winning content for PBS, CNN, BBC among others and is highly regarded for her knowledge and experience working in China for western media outlets. In April 2020, Liyan flew to Wuhan on the first day after its lockdown was lifted. Later that year, she led the first western film crew into the heart of the Chinese CDC. Her commitment to balanced and objective reporting has allowed her to gain the trust of officials, academics, and businessmen.

 

Most recently Liyan co-produced Decoding COVID-19 for NOVA (PBS) for which she won a Dupont Columbia Silver Baton.  She also co-produced Race for the Vaccine (CNN, BBC), which traces the world-changing discoveries of the vaccines against Covid-19.

 

Liyan grew up in China and received her professional training in the UK.  Liyan received an MA in International Journalism from Cardiff University in 2014.  Liyan is one of the few Chinese graduates from Cardiff who is still practicing journalism for international media from mainland China.
